DESCRIPTION — Hydroxy Citronellol (also known as Citronellol Hydrate or 3,7-Dimethyloctane-1,7-diol, CAS 107-74-4) is a mild, rose-floral aroma chemical prized by perfumers as both a fragrance note in its own right and a fixative that extends the odour life of other florals. It occurs naturally in trace amounts in blueberries, grapes, and white wine, and is manufactured for perfumery use by controlled hydrogenation.
Fragrance Profile
A soft, clean floral-muguet and rose character, with fresh, sweet, and slightly green facets reminiscent of lily and peony. The odour is gentle and unobtrusive on its own, but it is highly valued for what it does to a blend: it stabilises Hydroxycitronellal, prolongs the odour life of delicate florals, and smooths the blending of other ingredients in a composition.
Appearance & Handling
Colourless to pale, clear liquid. Slightly soluble in water; freely soluble in alcohol and oils. Store in a tightly closed container, away from direct sunlight and heat.
Uses & Applications
- Fixative and blender in rose, muguet (lily-of-the-valley), peony, and other white-floral fragrance compositions
- Stabiliser for Hydroxycitronellal, extending the odour life of the aldehyde in the finished blend
- Used across fine fragrance, soaps, shampoos, and scented personal care and home-care products
Recommended Usage Level: typically added in small proportions alongside the primary floral aldehydes/notes it supports — assess against your own formulation and applicable IFRA limits for the end product category.
