Ethogage – Ethanol Percentage Test Kit for Petrol (E5–E20)
Ethogage is a simple, calibrated water-line test kit that gives you an indicative percentage of ethanol blended in petrol in under 5 minutes — no lab, no reagents, no electricity. As India moves toward higher ethanol-blended fuel (E10, E12, E15, up to E20 under the government's ethanol blending programme), Ethogage lets vehicle owners, mechanics, and fuel outlets verify what they're actually putting in the tank.
How Ethogage Works
The kit uses a simple water-separation principle: ethanol mixes with water and separates out of petrol, letting you read the ethanol percentage directly off the calibrated scale on the bottle (5% to 30%).
- Step 1: Add water into the Ethogage calibrated bottle up to the marked water line.
- Step 2: Add your fuel sample into the test jar up to the marked fuel line.
- Step 3: Close the cap and shake vigorously for a few seconds, then let it rest for a few minutes.
- Step 4: Read the marking on the bottle where the water-ethanol layer settles to get the indicative ethanol percentage in your fuel sample.
Why Test Ethanol Percentage in Your Fuel
- Protect your engine: Fuel with ethanol content higher than what your vehicle is rated for can affect fuel lines, seals, and carburetor/injector components over time, especially in older vehicles not built for high ethanol blends.
- Verify what you're paying for: Quickly cross-check whether the petrol at the pump matches the ethanol blend it's supposed to be (E10, E15, E20, etc.).
- Catch adulteration early: Unusually high or inconsistent ethanol readings can be an early indicator of fuel adulteration or blending irregularities.
- No lab required: Get a reliable, indicative reading on the spot — at a fuel station, workshop, or your own garage.
Who Should Use Ethogage
- Car, bike & commercial vehicle owners who want to periodically check the fuel they're using, especially owners of older or ethanol-sensitive vehicles.
- Automobile workshops & mechanics diagnosing fuel-related engine issues, rough idling, or corrosion complaints.
- Petrol pump owners & fuel retailers carrying out routine quality checks on incoming fuel stock.
- Fleet operators & logistics companies monitoring fuel quality across multiple vehicles and fueling points.
- Laboratories, testing agencies & quality control teams needing a fast, low-cost indicative screening tool before detailed lab analysis.

Frequently Asked Questions
Q: Is the Ethogage reading lab-accurate?
A: Ethogage gives an indicative percentage of ethanol in fuel using a water-separation method. It's designed for quick field checks, not as a substitute for certified laboratory testing.
Q: Can I use Ethogage for diesel?
A: Ethogage is designed for testing ethanol-blended petrol. For water content in petrol and diesel, ASES also stocks Water Finding Paste.
Q: Is the kit reusable?
A: Yes, the calibrated bottle can be rinsed and reused for multiple tests.
Q: How much fuel sample do I need?
A: Just enough to fill the marked fuel line on the bottle, as shown in the instructions on the pack.
Note: Ethogage provides an indicative ethanol percentage reading and is intended for preliminary field screening. For statutory or certified quality reporting, please refer to accredited laboratory testing.
