DESCRIPTION — Aldehyde C-8 (Octanal, also called Caprylic Aldehyde or Octyl Aldehyde, CAS 124-13-0) is a classic fatty aldehyde used to give perfume compositions the sparkling, effervescent “aldehydic” lift that has defined fine fragrance since the early 20th century. It occurs naturally in citrus oils — sweet orange, bergamot, mandarin, and lemon — and is manufactured synthetically for consistent quality and supply.
Fragrance Profile
Sharp and pungent in concentration, Aldehyde C-8 opens out into a bright, waxy, orange-peel character at dilution, with fatty, green, and soft woody-floral undertones. Of the C8–C12 aldehyde family, C-8 reads more neutral and direct than C-9 (which leans zestier and fresher) — making it a dependable top-note aldehyde for citrus reconstructions and classic aldehydic-floral accords.
Appearance & Handling
Colourless to pale yellow liquid with a strong, penetrating odour. Insoluble in water; freely soluble in alcohol and most fragrance oils. Flash point ~125°F — flammable, so store in a cool place away from heat and open flame, tightly sealed. As with most true aldehydes, dilute in ethanol or another suitable alcohol before blending into a composition.
Uses & Applications
- Top-note lift in eau-de-cologne, citrus, and aldehydic-floral fragrance compositions
- Reconstruction and reinforcement of natural citrus oils (orange, bergamot, neroli) where the natural material alone is too delicate or costly
- Used in functional fragrance for soaps, detergents, and personal care where a bright, natural-citrus lift is needed
Recommended Usage Level: used in small, carefully dosed amounts — typically well under 1% of the finished compound, since the material is powerful and can turn soapy or harsh if overdosed. Always assess against your own formulation and applicable IFRA limits.
