Complete Guide to Melt and Pour Soap Bases in India — Transparent, Goat Milk, Shea Butter, Charcoal and More

If you are making handcrafted soaps in India — whether for personal use, a small business, or a private label brand — choosing the right melt and pour soap base is the single most important decision you will make. The base determines your bar's lather, skin feel, appearance, and shelf life. Everything else — fragrance, colour, botanicals — is secondary.

This guide covers every melt and pour soap base available from ASES Chemical Works, Jodhpur — one of India's oldest chemical and cosmetic raw material suppliers, established in 1942. We explain what each base does, who it is for, how it compares to alternatives, and answer the most common questions formulators and small business owners ask.

What is a melt and pour soap base?

A melt and pour soap base is a pre-made, pre-saponified soap that has already completed the chemical reaction between oils and lye. All you need to do is melt it, customise it with fragrance, colour, botanicals, or actives, and pour it into moulds. No lye handling, no curing time, no complex chemistry.

This makes melt and pour bases ideal for:

  • Soap makers who want to focus on creativity rather than chemistry
  • Small businesses that need consistent, repeatable results
  • Formulators who want to test ingredients and fragrances quickly
  • Home hobbyists and beginners getting started in soap making
  • Private label brands that need clean-label, sulphate-free products

Why sulphate free matters

Most mass-market soap bases in India contain SLS (Sodium Lauryl Sulphate) or SLES (Sodium Lauryl Ether Sulphate) as the primary surfactant. These ingredients are effective cleansers, but they are also known to strip the skin's natural oils, cause irritation in sensitive individuals, and are increasingly rejected by consumers buying premium or natural personal care products.

All ASES melt and pour soap bases are formulated without SLS or SLES. Instead, they use a combination of Lauryl Glucoside (a plant-derived sugar surfactant) and Cocamidopropyl Betaine (CAPB, derived from coconut oil) — both significantly milder than sulphates while still delivering excellent lather and cleansing performance.

This matters not just for skin health, but for marketing. A sulphate-free claim is one of the most searched-for attributes among Indian soap buyers in 2024–2025, driven by increased awareness of ingredient labels.

The ASES soap base range — a full comparison

ASES Chemical Works stocks six distinct melt and pour soap bases, a conditioning shampoo base, and industrial-grade soap noodles. Here is how they compare:

1. Transparent Glycerine Soap Base

Best for: Embedded botanical soaps, clear colour soaps, glitter soaps, hotel amenity bars
Appearance: Crystal clear solid block
Key ingredients: Glycerine, Sorbitol, Lauryl Glucoside, CAPB, Vitamin E
Price: ₹220/kg | ₹1,050 for 5 kg | ₹3,800 for 20 kg

The transparent base is the blank canvas of melt and pour soap making. Its crystal clarity lets embedded botanicals, dried flowers, glitter, and colour gradients show through beautifully. High glycerine and sorbitol content delivers excellent skin hydration — the skin does not feel tight or dry after washing. Suitable for all skin types including sensitive and baby skin.

The transparency also makes it the most versatile base for colour work. Liquid soap colours at 0.1–0.3% produce vivid, even results without cloudiness. It is compatible with all three other opaque bases and can be blended in any ratio — a 70% transparent + 30% goat milk blend, for example, gives a semi-clear, nourishing bar that shows embedded botanicals while delivering the skin benefits of goat milk.

2. Goat Milk Soap Base

Best for: Sensitive skin, dry skin, baby soaps, brightening bars
Appearance: Creamy white opaque block
Key ingredients: Goat Milk, Almond Oil, Jojoba Oil, Glycerine, Sorbitol, Vitamin E
Price: ₹240/kg | ₹1,150 for 5 kg | ₹4,000 for 20 kg

Goat milk is one of the most skin-compatible natural ingredients available. It contains lactic acid (an alpha hydroxy acid that gently exfoliates dead skin cells), vitamins A, B2, B6, B12, C, D, and E, and proteins that nourish and condition skin. The fat content of goat milk closely resembles the skin's natural lipid profile, making it exceptionally gentle on sensitive, reactive, and mature skin.

This base is the closest thing to a skincare soap — customers with dry skin, eczema-prone skin, or skin that reacts badly to regular soaps consistently report better outcomes with goat milk formulations. It is also a popular choice for baby and children's soaps precisely because of its mildness. Note: this base contains real animal-derived goat milk and is not vegan.

3. Shea Butter Soap Base

Best for: Very dry skin, mature skin, winter skin care, luxury body bars
Appearance: Creamy white opaque block
Key ingredients: Shea Butter, Almond Oil, Jojoba Oil, Glycerine, Sorbitol, Vitamin E
Price: ₹230/kg | ₹1,100 for 5 kg | ₹4,000 for 20 kg

Shea butter is rich in stearic and oleic fatty acids. It forms an occlusive layer on the skin that prevents moisture loss, reduces inflammation, and leaves the skin visibly softer. Unlike the Goat Milk base which nourishes through proteins and vitamins, the Shea Butter base works through lipid replenishment — it feeds the skin's fat layer. This makes it particularly effective in dry climates and during winter months. The base is fully vegan and pairs particularly well with warm, earthy fragrances.

4. Triple Butter Soap Base

Best for: Ultra-premium bars, very dry and mature skin, luxury gift sets
Appearance: Creamy ivory opaque block
Key ingredients: Shea Butter, Cocoa Butter, Mango Butter, Almond Oil, Jojoba Oil, Glycerine, Sorbitol, Vitamin E
Price: ₹250/kg | ₹1,200 for 5 kg | ₹4,000 for 20 kg

The Triple Butter base is the most intensely conditioning soap base in the ASES range. By combining shea (anti-inflammatory nourishment), cocoa (protective moisture seal), and mango butter (lightweight softening without greasiness), it delivers a broader spectrum of fatty acids and skin benefits than any single butter can alone. Shea restores elasticity, cocoa locks in moisture, and mango butter penetrates quickly without leaving a greasy residue. This base is ideal for high-end artisan brands, luxury gift sets, and hotel or spa amenity lines where the ingredient story matters.

5. Detox Charcoal Soap Base

Best for: Oily skin, acne-prone skin, men's grooming, pore-cleansing bars
Appearance: Deep black opaque block
Key ingredients: Bamboo Charcoal Powder, Glycerine, Sorbitol, Lauryl Glucoside, CAPB, Vitamin E
Price: ₹230/kg | ₹220 for 5 kg | ₹4,000 for 20 kg

Bamboo charcoal has an extremely porous surface structure that physically adsorbs excess sebum, environmental pollutants, and pore-blocking debris. Unlike chemical exfoliants, charcoal works mechanically and gently without causing irritation. The black colour is entirely natural — no colourant is needed. The striking appearance makes it a standout in retail displays and is particularly popular in men's grooming lines. Despite the detox action, the base does not dry out the skin — glycerine and sorbitol provide humectant balance.

6. Menthol Aloe Vera Soap Base

Best for: Cooling bars, summer use, after-sun care, sports and gym bars
Appearance: Translucent with a fresh herbal tone
Key ingredients: Menthol Oil, Aloe Vera Juice, Basil Oil, Glycerine, Sorbitol, Lauryl Glucoside, CAPB, Vitamin E
Price: ₹250/kg | ₹1,200 for 5 kg | ₹4,000 for 20 kg

Menthol activates the skin's cold receptors, producing an intense cooling sensation that persists for several minutes after washing. This is not a superficial fragrance effect — it is a genuine physiological response. Aloe vera juice calms and soothes sun-exposed or irritated skin. Basil oil adds a natural antimicrobial dimension. Together, these actives create a bar with real functional differentiation. Ideal for summer collections, gym and sports gift sets, and after-sun care bars.

Can I blend different soap bases?

Yes — all six ASES bases are fully compatible and can be blended in any ratio. Popular combinations include:

  • Transparent + Goat Milk (70:30): Semi-clear bar that shows embedded botanicals with milk protein benefits
  • Triple Butter + Goat Milk (50:50): Ultra-nourishing bar for very dry or mature skin
  • Charcoal + Transparent (70:30): Charcoal grey rather than black, lighter feel with better lather
  • Menthol Aloe + Transparent (50:50): Clearer bar with a lighter cooling effect

Frequently asked questions

Q: How many soap bars does 1 kg of base make?
A: Approximately 8–10 bars of 100 g each, depending on your mould size.

Q: Why does my soap base sweat or get wet on the surface?
A: Glycerin-based bases are hygroscopic — they attract moisture from humid air. Always wrap finished bars in shrink wrap immediately after setting, especially during India's monsoon months.

Q: How much fragrance should I add?
A: 2–3% by weight of the base is standard. For baby products or scalp applications, stay at 0.5–1%. Add after the base has cooled to around 55°C.

Q: Can I add herbal powders like turmeric, neem, or sandalwood?
A: Yes, at 0.5–2% just before pouring. Turmeric will colour the bar yellow-orange. Sandalwood powder, oatmeal, and multani mitti work well in all bases without overpowering fragrance.

Q: What is the difference between melt and pour and cold process soap?
A: Cold process soap is made from scratch by mixing oils with sodium hydroxide (lye) and requires a 4–6 week curing period. Melt and pour bases have already completed this process — no lye handling, no curing time, usable within hours. Melt and pour is ideal for beginners, small businesses, and fast production.

Q: Are ASES soap bases suitable for commercial production?
A: Yes. All bases are available in 20 kg slabs — the most economical pack size for commercial use. Contact us at ecom@ases.in for bulk pricing above 100 kg.
