An amorphous brownish-black powder, the black copper oxide may be found in the mineral’s tenorite and paramelaconite in nature. It's a pigment used in glass, artificial jewels, enamels, and ceramics. Black copper oxide is also used in copper metallurgy as an abrasive for polishing optical glass and as a flux.
Molecular Formulae- CuO
Alternative Names- Copper (II) Oxide, Cupric Oxide
Country of Origin- India
BENEFITS AND APPLICATION-
- The Edison–Lalande cell, an early type of battery, included a copper oxide black electrode.
- The copper oxide black was also employed in lithium batteries.
- Copper oxide black, a substantial byproduct of copper mining, serves as the starting point for the manufacture of various copper salts. Many wood preservatives, for example, are made from copper oxide.
- It is a pigment used in ceramics to create blue, red, and green glazes, as well as gray, pink, and black glazes.
- Copper oxide black is erroneously used in animal feed as a nutritional supplement. Copper is absorbed insignificantly due to its poor bioactivity.
- It is used in the welding of copper alloys.
