Methyl Acetate – Fast-Evaporating Ester Solvent
Methyl acetate (C3H6O2) is the methyl ester of acetic acid. It is a clear, colourless, highly volatile liquid with a sweet, fruity, ether-like odour. Its fast evaporation and strong solvency make it a widely used solvent in coatings, adhesives and laboratory work, and a common low-toxicity alternative to acetone in many formulations.

Applications
- Coatings & Lacquers: Fast-drying solvent for nitrocellulose lacquers, inks and resin systems.
- Adhesives: Solvent in contact cements and glue formulations.
- Nail & Cosmetic Products: Used in nail polish removers and paint/varnish removers as an acetone alternative.
- Laboratory: General-purpose solvent for extraction, cleaning and chromatography work.
- Chemical Synthesis: Intermediate and reaction medium in organic chemistry.
Handling & Storage
Methyl acetate is highly flammable and its vapours can form explosive mixtures with air. Store in a tightly closed container in a cool, well-ventilated area away from heat, sparks, open flames and oxidising agents. Use in a well-ventilated space with gloves and safety goggles; avoid breathing vapours. Refer to the SDS before use.
